Google Ads Attribution Tip
Auto-Tagging (GCLID) vs. ValueTrack UTMs: What's the Difference?
Google Ads auto-tagging automatically passes click data to Google Analytics 4 via GCLID. However, external CRMs (Salesforce, HubSpot), backend billing databases, and third-party attribution platforms require explicit UTM tags and ValueTrack tokens to capture search terms, campaign IDs, and device types without data loss.

How to create a permanent QR code with UTM tracking in 3 steps
Paste your destination URL
Use the website or landing page you want people to visit. The tool automatically formats and validates secure https:// addresses.
Add tags if you need them
Set a source, medium, and campaign to distinguish visits in your analytics. Perfect for flyers, business cards, billboards, or email signatures.
Download and test
Save an SVG or PNG. Scan it on your phone before adding it to a flyer, sign, or business card. The resulting QR code never expires.
Understanding QR Technology
Static vs. Dynamic QR Codes: Why These QR Codes Never Expire
Many online QR code generators lure users in with "free" offers, only to break printed flyers weeks later. Here is how static and dynamic QR codes differ under the hood:
Direct Static QR Codes This Tool
Encodes your destination URL and tracking parameters directly into the black-and-white matrix pattern.
- Zero expiration date: Works permanently as long as your destination website remains live.
- No third-party redirect: Scanners navigate directly to your domain without passing through an external server.
- No monthly paywalls: 100% free with unlimited scans forever.
- Maximum privacy: No external vendor tracks your visitors or logs scan coordinates.
Proprietary Dynamic QR Codes Subscription Services
Encodes a middleman redirect link (e.g., short.link/xyz) hosted on the generator's proprietary servers.
- Paywall risk: After a 14-day trial or 50 scans, redirect services often deactivate codes unless you pay monthly subscriptions.
- Broken print collateral: If the vendor closes down or changes pricing, printed signs and brochures stop functioning.
- Third-party data harvesting: The intermediary server intercepts and records scanner device info and IP addresses.
- Slower scan latency: Requires an extra HTTP redirect hop before reaching your landing page.

UTM Parameter Cheat Sheet for Google Analytics 4 (GA4)
UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are five query tags added to URLs that tell analytics platforms exactly where a visit originated. Use this cheat sheet to standardize your campaign tags across marketing channels:
| Parameter | GA4 Dimension | Status | Example Values | Purpose & Best Practice |
|---|---|---|---|---|
utm_source |
Session source | Recommended | flyer, newsletter, linkedin |
Identifies the specific platform, publisher, or physical item where the link was found. |
utm_medium |
Session medium | Recommended | qr, print, email, cpc |
Identifies the high-level marketing channel. Use qr or print for offline media. |
utm_campaign |
Session campaign | Recommended | spring_sale, trade_show_2026 |
Identifies the overarching promotion, event, or product launch. |
utm_term |
Session manual term | Optional | commercial_roofing, b2b |
Primarily used for paid search keywords or targeting specific demographic segments. |
utm_content |
Session manual ad content | Optional | front_cover, table_tent, cta_v2 |
Differentiates creative variants, placements, or A/B tests pointing to the same destination. |
Consistency is Key
Always use lowercase letters. Google Analytics treats Email and email as two separate rows, fragmenting your reports.
Clean Delimiters
Separate words with underscores (spring_sale) or hyphens. Avoid spaces or symbols that get encoded as messy %20 strings.
View in GA4 Reports
Find your visits in Google Analytics 4 under Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition, filtered by Session source / medium.
Design & Production
QR Code Printing & Sizing Guidelines
Ensure reliable phone scanning across print materials by following these core physical design rules:
Vector SVG vs. High-Res PNG
Download SVG for banners, billboards, apparel, and commercial print shops. Vector files scale infinitely without pixelation. Use PNG for websites, emails, and office docs.
The 4-Module Quiet Zone
Always preserve the white border around the QR matrix. Cropping into this margin or placing the code directly over busy photos prevents smartphone cameras from locking onto finder squares.
Scanning Distance Formula
Rule of thumb: Minimum Code Width = Scanning Distance ÷ 10. A tabletop card scanned from 12 inches away should be at least 1.2" wide; a poster scanned from 5 feet away needs at least a 6" code.
Clear Answers
Frequently Asked Questions: QR Codes & UTM Tracking
Will my QR code expire?
The QR code has no expiration date or subscription requirement. It contains your destination URL directly and keeps working independently of this tool. Your website and destination address still need to remain available.
Can I change the destination after printing?
The address inside a downloaded QR code is fixed. If you change the address in this tool, download the new code and replace the old one wherever it is used.
Do I need campaign tracking to create a QR code?
No. A website address is all you need. Campaign parameters are optional, and you can also use this tool just to build and copy a campaign link.
Does this count scans or set up conversion tracking?
No. Campaign parameters identify visits in analytics already installed on your destination website. They do not count every scan or install analytics or conversion tracking.
Which format should I download?
Use SVG for scalable print artwork. PNG works well in documents and digital designs. Keep the white border intact, avoid stretching or blurring the code, and test the final design with a phone.
How should I name my UTM parameters?
Use consistent lowercase values. Source identifies the placement, medium identifies the channel, and campaign identifies the promotion. For example: source=summer_flyer, medium=print, campaign=open_house. Content can distinguish designs; term can identify a keyword or audience. Review the final link before sharing.
How do I see QR code visits in Google Analytics 4 (GA4)?
In Google Analytics 4, navigate to Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition. Set your primary dimension to Session source / medium or Session campaign. You will see traffic, sessions, and conversions attributed to your custom QR parameters.
Why do some other free QR code generators stop working?
Many commercial generators create dynamic QR codes that route through their proprietary redirect servers. Once a trial period ends or a scan quota is exceeded, they hold your code hostage behind a monthly subscription. Our generator creates direct static QR codes that point straight to your destination URL with no middlemen.
